Representative David Richardson was elected on August 14th, 2012. He is currently serving his second term in the Florida House of Representatives. He is also the first openly gay elected official in Florida legislature.
Last week, Live Free Be Strong got the opportunity to meet with him at his office in Miami.
David Richardson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, earned from the University of Central Florida, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree in accounting from the same university. He received his Masters in Business Administration from the University of Tampa.
He, initially, was not involved in politics beyond helping others to get elected. He worked with Victory Fund, a group specifically dedicated to help members of the LGBT community run for and be elected to positions in politics.
“While working for Victory Fund people kept asking me ‘why don’t you run for a position?'”
Representative Richardson took their advice following and ran for office following the retirement of House Representative Richard Steinberg. He narrowly beat out his three opponents for the 113th District’s House seat.
While he had a large amount of opponents in the race, he faced little opposition from the public. His sexual orientation held little effect on his election, people were either supportive or didn’t see it as a factor into whether he would be a good politician. The Miami Herald ran an article about the “Openly Gay CPA”, and following his election on August 14th dozens of other papers followed suit.
One of the current things that Live Free Be Strong is focusing on is cyber-bullying, and we were happy to get his feedback on that subject as well.
“I think it would be difficult to legislate. That behavior has been around for years…we need to educate people, and teach that it occurs”.
Representative Richardson plans to run for reelection for his house seat this year, and for senate in years following.
